3rd Festival of contemporary dance duets “Diversia”

Dates: 27th-30th September, 2009
Place: Russia, Kostroma
Organizer: Dialogue Dance School and Company
Idea: Festival performing some interesting independent contemporary dance duets as separate creative units which have special potential to impress their ideas through movement. Festival includes participants’ performances, workshops and discussions.

Information for the participants
The main request: the presence of two performers.
Performance’s duration from 15 to 45 minutes.
Dead-line for application forms and videos is 31 of December 2008.

The Festival covers traveling charges (territory of Russia) and accomandation of participants. Organizers of the Festival assists in search of the finance on air flights for the international participants. The Festival doesn’t fee for the performances.

"A deal is a commercial operation which applies to some forbidden or strictly controlled values. The deal is made in a neutral, indefinite and unfit for this purpose place between a supplier and buyer- according to a silent agreement, conventional signs or in an equivocal conversation with an aim of fraud, which always is a result of such action. It can be performed in any time of day and night, independent of the official trade establishments work hours, and more probably when they are already closed”.

Kulagin and Estegneev work together as Dialogue Dance since 2002. They are creating duet performances for more than 5 years, in these they strive to find a compromise for common artistic process, connecting the experiences of each other that were received in different art genres.

Breakbone’s punk rock fashion sextet, datastarve, is a bombardment of clashing components. This multi-media work contrasts the idealized model thin body type to that of the dense musculature of the athletic female body type, the long ethereal lines of a ballet dancer to that of the bold strength of a modern dancer, the strict confines of the Haute Couture fashion world to that of the intensely aggressive Punk Rock fashion scene, and the skilled beauty of the High Stepper horse to that of the powerful rawness of the Draft Workhorse. The work evolves into using dance as a form of communication between the two disparate vocabularies, to find a balance of equality and a place of acceptance.

Breakbone Dance Company celebrates 10 years of breaking the rules in dance with their "...choreography for the 21st century..." (Chicago Reader). Continuing to pave the way with their boundary breaking performances they have proudly emerged as a highly daring voice taking you to places where no other Chicago dance company will dare to tread. Literally crashing into the dance scene in 1996, Breakbone has taken the lead in visually unique & viscerally cinematic danceworks exploiting & exploring their original aggressive dance exile style that has been a commanding presence in the Chicago dance community.

A. Albert and A. Konnikova began to work together in 1995 as a part of «Expressive movement class» of G. Abramov, as well as in independent projects together with alternative musicians, painters, video artists. In 1999 they were two of the founders of Po.V.S.Tanzy Dance Company. The first duet performance «&» was created in 2003.
Except for the creation and performing of dance pieces they performed improvised duets in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Tel-Aviv.
They worked in Yaroslavl, Nairobi (Kenya) and Kostroma as a duet of invited choreographers. They also work as a duet of teachers- they teach contemporary dance technique and improvisation in TSEH Summer School in Moscow, other Cities in Russia and abroad.

„Through the bottle neck“ is a tiny story, a first choreographic try. It arose from a long-standing friendship, which became the main source of inspiration. It doesn’t try to depict a story, describe it from outside, but it tries to open itself to a sensitive observer. Only through the way of intuition, also the spectator can become a participator in the most confidential conversations and discover the secret wishes… As if he looked into the window of someone else’s flat and witnessed a small part of somebody’s stories.

Premiere 2002, 2^nd prize and the public prize in the International Competition for Choreographers of Contemporary Dance in Bornem (2004).

I screamed: «leave... leave and never come back», and I didn’t want him to leave... I closed the door behind him and started crying. I had a feeling that I lost everything in this world, but I understood that our love is not possible, and it would be better for us to break up...
Doorbell rings, I knew, but I didn’t really believe... He, he came back! «We have three hours and nothing else », he said... I was standing in the kitchen, smoking with my eyes full of tears. He put me on his lap. I was looking at him understanding that I hate him, push him, he does the same, we love each other but will never confess that to each other. He is too good, too different, too married for me. "Last ten minutes», he whispered...
I started crying, as I never cried before, not because I fell in love with someone like him, but because I hate him and at the same time love him with all my heart... He started to sob...
So everything that happened was... something like this..."

“Back” is an exploration of the subtle and dynamic fluidity of immediacy. Throughout the process of creating the work our attention has been focused on revealing and unraveling the unspoken often unconscious narratives that play themselves out between us everyday. With this in mind we began to think about the work and the space it inhabits as a kind of extraordinary representation of the space between two people and the things that occupy it. “Back” traces the meandering dreamlike journey that is the reality of relationship. This is a world in which we inhabit each others dreams, the many layers of our consciousness’ and the physical world, knotting our narratives in an often unpredictable journey through space and time.
When we want someone there’s nobody there, when a someone finally appears we want to be alone.
The work flirts with memory and dabbles with desire. It explores our need to be needed our pursuit for belonging and our fight for independence. “Back” captures the ambiguity of our experiences in relationships. In short it is something about love, loss, memory, desire, intimacy, jealousy, belonging and isolation.

Duet was commissioned for and premiered at the 2008 FNB Dance Umbrella in
Johannesburg South Africa.

Hugarian Art of Movement Company, foto

The Hugarian Art of Movement Company was formed in the September 1995 under the name of "1 More Movement Theather" leaded by Mark Fenyves and Istvan Palosi, who've been the part of the company ever since then. Their first individual whole evening piece titled "Vagy Variaciok" (Lust Variations) was first performed in 1998 September. The company created four duets during these years. The Hungarian Art of Movement Company's main goal is to preserve, and consistently and practically resurrect and continue the traditions of the traditional Hungarian modern dance, the art-of-movement. The Hungarian Art of Movement Company is the youngest generation of the almost hundred-year-old art-of-movement tradition, that's been banned after 1948. Their artistic and creative work is backed up by extensive theoretical and research work by fostering Valeria Dienes' heritage - her movement-sience, - the Orchestika-, her movement theory and artistic works.

In 2007 graduated the Latvian Academy of Culture, Contemporary Dance departament. In 2003 graduated Latvian Culture collegue (contemporary dance performer). Choreographer and leader of contemporary dance project Anatomy of dance. Since year 2000 artistic director, teacher and choreographer in Dance Studio Ritms.

In 2003 graduated the Latvian Academy of Culture, Contemporary Dance departament. From 2003-2005 dancer in Olgas Zitluhinas dance company (Latvia); 2006- 2007 dancer in Xaris Dance company (Germany). Since 2005 hip-hop teacher in Latvia Academy of Culture. Now working as independent choreographer and dancer

Breakbone Dance Company, foto

Atalee Judy can be seen teaching her codified style of extreme dance, The Bodyslam Technique, and has established herself as one of Chicago's premiere performers and visionaries. Atalee started Breakbone in 1996 after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia College Chicago in Choreography & Dance Performance (with Honors in Outstanding Achievement) and wanted a company to house her extreme emotional and athletic nature while exploring and exploiting her background in the 1980's punk hardcore scene of New York City and her experiences in the martial arts.

Tabitha Faes completed her studies in 2004 and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance from Columbia College Chicago. She is a founding member of Breakbone DanceCo. and was a featured soloist on the company’s 2006 tour to Canada. Courtesy of the Peace Corps, Tabitha traveled to Paraguay to teach dance workshops for building stronger community ties. She has also taught workshops at University of Hawaii.

Every event of Dialogue Dance is a step which creates a new platform of contemporary dance in Russia. Diversia in the life of Kostroma signifies the main dance event of the year. Currently Diversia Festival is the only international festival in Russia that presents a special form of contemporary dance which is a duet. The difference of the Festival from the set of dance events happening in Moscow is the unique program that includes dance performances of independent duets which are not a part of world dance establishment.

This year the program of the festival will present duets from Russia, Hungary, USA, Czech Republic, Latvia, South Africa. In the course of three nights 8 contemporary dance performances will be shown on the stage of the theater. Diversia 2008 will undermine all possible ideas about contemporary art. This multisided event will unite punk rock duet from Chicago, ironic as always Dialogue Dance, African dancers genuinely open in their energy and shrilly lyric duets from Eastern Europe. The Festival will be a true explosion for the audience and will engage and attract new admirers of contemporary art.

Dialogue Dance school will conduct master classes with Festival participants in body slam and African contemporary technique, as well as discussions with specially invited contemporary dance critics.

In this year the Festival is organized by Dialogue Dance School and Company, with the support of TSEH Agency of Dance Theaters, Ford Foundation, Czech Culture Center, Hungarian Republic Culture Center.
